WHY TO CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRLCelebrated each year on October 11, International Day of the Girl (IDG) is an annual day of recognition to raise awareness of the need for girls’ rights, promote and amplify girls’ voices and shed a light on the unique challenges girls and young women face around the world. Adopted by the UNITED NATIONS General Assembly in 2011, International Day of the Girl increases awareness of issues faced by girls around the world. Many global development plans do not include or consider girls, and their issues become "invisible". The celebration of the day also reflects the successful emergence of girls and young women as a distinct cohort in development policy, programming, campaigning and research.
